Holiday Overwhelm? Intentional Focus for Every Enneagram Type
Overcome Holiday Overwhelm. Intentional Focus for Every Enneagram Type
Intentional focus on our common unconscious trap allows us to reframe the negative into a positive. I love Christmas songs because they carry a sense of hope, nostalgia, and anticipation. Songs have a unique way of grounding us, helping us to overcome the overwhelm and reminding us what matters most during this busy time of year.
This year, I’m pairing my holiday focus with a Christmas song. Every time I hear it, I am reminded to pause, breathe, and connect to what really matters. Let’s find yours!
Holiday Traps by Type & Your Song Reminder
Type 1: The Perfectionist
- Trap: Feeling pressure to create a picture-perfect holiday.
- Tip: Embrace imperfection—focus on connection, not flawless execution.
- Song: Let It Snow
- When you hear “Oh, the weather outside is frightful…” remind yourself to let go of what you can’t control. Enjoy the messiness of the season—it’s where the memories are made!
Type 2: The Helper
- Trap: Overcommitting to serve everyone at the expense of your own needs.
- Tip: Set boundaries; your presence is enough.
- Song: Santa Baby
- Let this playful tune remind you to ask for something for yourself this Christmas. It’s okay to want a little joy and care, too!
Type 3: The Achiever
- Trap: Turning the holidays into a performance.
- Tip: Pause the “doing” and focus on being with loved ones.
- Song: The Little Drummer Boy
- The line “I have no gifts to bring…” reminds you that your presence—not your achievements—is the greatest gift.
Type 4: The Individualist
- Trap: Longing for the perfect, magical holiday and feeling like what you have isn’t enough.
- Tip: Celebrate small joys and present moments.
- Song: All I Want for Christmas Is You
- Use this song as a mantra to appreciate who and what you already have in your life. Gratitude is the real magic.
Type 5: The Investigator
- Trap: Isolating to preserve your energy and missing out on connection.
- Tip: Balance alone time with intentional moments of connection.
- Song: We Wish You a Merry Christmas
- Think of Scrooge’s transformation. Every time you hear this carol, ask yourself: What’s my “figgy pudding” to share with others?
Type 6: The Loyalist
- Trap: Over-preparing for every possible holiday disaster.
- Tip: Trust that things will work out; let go of excessive worrying.
- Song: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
- The line “Let your heart be light…” is a gentle nudge to trust and enjoy the moment without carrying all the weight yourself.
Type 7: The Enthusiast
- Trap: Overcommitting to every party and event, chasing excitement.
- Tip: Slow down and savor meaningful, intentional moments.
- Song: Silent Night
- Use the peaceful melody as a reminder to pause, reflect, and stay present with the people who matter most.
Type 8: The Challenger
- Trap: Overfilling your plate with big projects and wearing strength like a shield.
- Tip: Let your guard down; share affection and gratitude.
- Song: I’ll Be Home for Christmas
- Let this song remind you to bring your heart home for the holidays. Strength isn’t about doing it all—it’s about being present with those who love you.
Type 9: The Peacemaker
- Trap: Merging with others’ wishes and avoiding your own needs.
- Tip: Speak up about what matters to you this holiday season.
- Song: Grown-Up Christmas List
- This reflective song asks, What do I really want? Use it to inspire you to articulate your dreams and priorities this season.
Family Holiday Fun: You’ve Been Gobbled! 🦃
Here’s a fun activity to spread joy in your neighborhood. You can create festive bags filled with small goodies and a “You’ve Been Gobbled!” note to leave anonymously for neighbors. It’s a simple way to teach your kids about generosity and connection during the holidays.
